    1. I think, that unless you are a n expert at bullet swaging, and can insert tungsten or steel rod, these lead cores aren’t by themselves going to have much punching power, even with a LAV.

    2. Even a .50 AP round isn’t likely to penetrate that vehicle. An AMAX bullet won’t even dent it.

The thing about armored vehicles is that there are a whole lot of places they can’t go, and people can’t hide in them forever.

      1. The M2 was designed for penetrating LAVs. I’m sure there are other, non-DR, rounds designed for the same purpose.

        1. Sure, but consider when that round was designed. New kinds of armor have been developed, and modern armored vehicles typically offer better ballistic protection than the older ones.

The BearCat’s armor is said to have a Level IV rating (i.e., will stop .30-06 AP). Steel that will stop .30-06 AP will almost definitely stop non-AP .50 BMG as well. I don’t know for sure about the .50 BMG AP, but I suspect it might have trouble getting through, depending on the muzzle velocity, the distance, the thickness of the armor where the bullet hits, the angle at which the bullet hits, etc.

I could be wrong about the .50 BMG AP not getting through the BearCat. It’s just not a chance I’d want to take without knowing the exact specs on that armor.

  1. The name is inappropriate for its function . The proper name would be bearaat. Never have I seen swat launch a “counter”-attack. In every case they have been the attackers.

  2. Best best with common civilian arms is to block that vehicle in and light it up. The occupants can cook in their 4 wheeled oven or come out and get picked off.

  3. This vehicle is so easy to defeat , without even firing a shot , and cheap too

    An old used wine bottle
Gasoline , some styrofoam packing peanuts and an old cotton T shirt plus a match

I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination

  4. OH I DONT KNOW…… A WELL PLACED A MAX ROUND THROUGH THE PASSENGER OR DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WOULD PROBABLY CLEAN OFF THE SEAT………..

    1. That may only give away your position and get you killed. My wife worked for Guardian Glass, they made the windows for Humvees and other LAVs. A lead core will not penetrate that glass. Like I said the best move with LAVs is to isolate, disable and turn them into mobile ovens. I know we discussed this tactic before also…quick way to imobilize, if not fully at least make navigation nearly impossible is to cover the windshield with opaque paint. Then the rest of the job becomes easier.

    2. AMAX bullets are very accurate, but they’re not very good at penetrating hard targets. I certainly wouldn’t bet my life on one penetrating the window of an armored vehicle.

Bullet construction makes an enormous difference when it comes to penetrating armor. I have seen .30-06 AP rounds punch through steel armor that easily stopped .50 BMG ball rounds. (Then again, I’ve also seen .50 BMG ball punch through Level IV ceramic plates that were rated for at least one shot of .30-06 AP.) Of course .50 AP rounds will easily penetrate anything that .30-06 AP will.

By the way, you can still buy .50 BMG and .30-cal AP rounds and bullets on the Web. They aren’t cheap, but I think anyone who can afford them should at least have a small supply:

I don’t know how well a .50 AP round would do against the BearCat, but the larger version of that vehicle, the B.E.A.R., is said to have windows that can stop multiple hits of .50 BMG. Whether that means AP or ball isn’t indicated:

Whatever the case, were I involved in a war, I would try to avoid engaging armored vehicles with a rifle.

  5. Simple solution’s: You can’t see you can’t drive –or shoot

    Paint balls to windscreen or

Paint filled balloons fill them 50-50 with water and latex paint

Easily launched with a beach water balloon launcher …
