Army Retiring 9mm Pistols, Looking For More ‘Knock-Down Power’

Breitbart – by AWR Hawkins

The Army is retiring its 9mm pistols in hopes of getting a service pistol with better “knock-down power.”

This means over 200,000 Beretta M9 and Sig Sauer M11 pistols will be phased out, and replaced by 400,000 new guns the Defense Department is ready to purchase once a new model is agreed upon.

According to Fox News, the Army is holding an “industry day” on July 29, whereat various gun manufacturers will be able to offer new models of handguns and compete for the chance to succeed the M9 and M11.

A spokesperson involved in the process said: “We are not dictating a caliber during the competition. A vendor may submit multiple calibers of ammunition. However, the ammunition must exceed the performance of the current M882 9mm round.”

Handguns expected to be most popular in the bid to succeed the M9 an M11 are those chambered in 40 or 45.

The Army is looking for a durable gun that will “provide the soldier with increased terminal performance.”

  1. In 10 or 15 years the debate will rise once again and compel the military to spend billions to pad the pockets of selected contractors to re arm the soldiers.
No handgun caliber is as adequate as a soldier wants. A hand gun is a last minute defensive weapon to fight your way back to the rifle you should have had in the first place.

    1. Optimistic, aren’t we, Bullwinkle.

10 or 15 years? One, maybe two, AT BEST, before it all goes south.

Wouldn’t make any long-term plans if I were you.

      Jus’ sayin’.

  2. great. now Im going to have to learn a new set of guns and stock up on HIGH CAP Mags for the new standards. (part of my prep is to pick up ‘issued’ gear from the bloody bastards that chose to die for tyranny.

    I never liked 9mm pistols for defense/attack.
I love 9mm on the storm model SBR. Great gun for teaching technique with. Far better imo than a .22 for training. Its louder but its no 12Ga. It kicks more but its no 7mm.

I love the .45 but I do hope they go .40S&W. Bring it back and make it the biggest again. .45 will always be popular and mass produced but the .40 is considered a ‘designer’ caliber nowadays.

the 9mm will fade into history as a bullet only good enough to spray and pray with, or teach safety.

  3. What ever pistol they pick, Im sure it will work as well as the F-35….Thats what happens when you let moron monkeys run the show….

  4. depends on the target,
if it’s citizens – of any country, then 9mm is good enough.

but if it’s for real combat then probably only the Five-Seven is good enough to cut through armor at the moment.
HK was working on a pistol to fire MP7 amunition, but i dont think it’s ready yet.

  5. Never wasted my time on anything that small

I want stopping power. If I could CC my 44 mag I would
yet I do understand that its all about shot placement..and I dont have a problem with that, so when I Place a .45 or .44 mag where I choose to, there wont be any need to empty the magazine. I have no issues handing that size of hand gun
there will be plenty left if there are any more that want to jump in front of it
