Beech-Nut Recalls Baby Food After Glass Found in Jar

No parent expects to find a small piece of glass in their jarred baby food, but that’s exactly what happened to one consumer of the Beech-Nut brand.

The incident was immediately reported and now Beech-Nut has issued a voluntary recall of nearly 2,000 pounds of product that were shipped nationwide and may be contaminated with small glass pieces, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Just one baby food variety is included in the recall: 4-oz. glass jars of Stage 2 Beech-Nut CLASSICS sweet potato & chicken.

If you have this type of Beech-Nut food in your pantry, check the label for establishment number P-68A in the USDA mark of inspection, and see if the expiration date says DEC 2016 and includes product numbers 12395750815 through 12395750821. (All of this information is listed on the jar’s lid.) If you have any of these baby food products in your home, throw them out or bring them to whichever retail location they were purchased and ask for a refund or exchange.

Thankfully, only one oral injury has been reported so far. But if you think your baby may have swallowed glass, call your doctor immediately and explain what has happened. Do this even if he or she has no symptoms because the glass could damage the esophagus, stomach, or intestines without you even knowing it.

Still worried? Questions about the recall can be directed to the company’s consumer hotline by calling (866) 674-4446. And for more information visit, www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Tell family and friends so they’re aware of the food hazard, and try not to fret once you’ve fully checked your cabinets. Trust that you’ve done everything you can as a parent to ensure your baby’s safety.
