1/24/13 – SALEM, OR (KPTV) – If you’re a regular smoker, you may want to keep an eye on a new bill in the Oregon Legislature. Rep. Mitch Greenlick, from Portland, is sponsoring a bill that makes cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance, meaning it would be illegal to possess or distribute cigarettes without a doctor’s prescription. Under the proposal, offenders would face maximum punishments of one year in prison, a $6,250 fine or both.
Other drugs and substances that are considered Schedule III controlled substances are ketamine, lysergic acid and anabolic steroids.

“The State Board of Pharmacy may adopt rules placing requirements and limitations on the sale or transfer of products containing nicotine,” the bill’s text says.”I think it’s pretty crazy,” said Juan Silva of Salem. “I don’t see it going through. It’s going to be something to watch for, but I don’t think it’ll pass.”

Others see the proposal differently.

“I hope it passes and I hope people actually think about it,” said Rick Cannon of Salem. “You know there’s less and less smokers everyday because they know how bad it is for them, so I just hope people wake up and realize how bad it actually is for them.”

  1. Is smoking bad for you? Yes. Does it give you cancer? Yes. Should you smoke? No. Does the government have the right to tell you whether you can or cannot smoke? Absolutely not. There are plenty of foods and drinks and other things that are good and bad for your health but the government has no right to force you to live, breathe, eat or drink the way they think you should. That is OUR right and OUR choice. Next thing you know they’ll be banning alchohol, fat and sunlight. After all, they are using taxes to manipulate our usage.

  2. Don’t really see it going anywhere but…if it did better get soft drinks on there and fast food.Pretty basically anything they think may not be good for you.

  3. Well in the immortal words of my daddy, “If ya cain’t grow it,brew it, make it or cook it, what good are ya?” Let the infrastructure collapse, I and many others will adapt, improvise and overcome what lies ahead. As I see it all law’s “protecting me from myself” interfere with my pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Therefore, those laws are unconstitutional.

    BAHAHAHAAHAAHAHA!!! ROLMFAO!!!

Ok, first off, they tried this in China (where over 90% of the 1 billion population smoke on a daily basis) and the people nearly ran the Communist government out of town, so I’m sorry, but this bill will never see the light of day. Even my Chinese father in law living in China who smokes told me that the Chinese government would never make a law for Chinese people to stop selling cigarettes because everyone would revolt. That is one thing that all Chinese can agree on. Let’s just say that taking cigarettes away from people in China would be like taking away guns from WE THE PEOPLE in the U.S.

Anyways, as far as taking those away in the U.S. or restricting them to prescription, I don’t see that happening. Tobacco companies would be pissed and would lose too much money.

  5. If they think they have problem now with junkies, crackheads, and tweakers, wait until they get a load of a crazed nicotine deprived tobacco addict.

    They ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

    I should know, I’m one.

    BAD call!

  6. Look at the bright side – under ObamaScare contraceptives AND cigarettes will be covered. Is this a great country or what?

  7. “I smoke. If this bothers anyone, I suggest that you look around at the world in which we live and shut your f#@kin’ mouth.” Bill Hicks

“Scientists have proved that if you stop smoking cigarettes it can prolong your life. What they haven’t proved yet is that a prolonged life is a good thing.” Bill Hicks
