SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday signed legislation aimed at taking handguns and assault rifles away from 20,000 Californians who acquired them legally but have since been disqualified from ownership because of a criminal conviction or serious mental illness.

The measure, the first of several gun-related bills to reach the governor, allocates $24 million in surplus funds to hire dozens of additional special agents to tackle a backlog of 40,000 weapons in the hands of people not allowed to possess firearms.

“This bipartisan bill makes our communities safer by giving law enforcement the resources they need to get guns out of the hands of potentially dangerous individuals,” said Evan Westrup, a spokesman for the governor.

The state operates a database that cross-references a list of gun owners with those disqualified later from owning guns. But, budget cuts have prevented the state Department of Justice from keeping up with the growing number of people on the list.

State Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) introduced SB 140, which takes the money from fees paid when people buy guns and allocates it to a three-year campaign to take guns from those ineligible to have them.

“We know for the safety of our communities that these people should not possess guns, and our reinvestment in this tracking program gives us the opportunity to confiscate them,” Leno said in a statement.

The measure was opposed by Sam Paredes, executive director of Gun Owners of California, who said it should be paid for by the state general fund.

“Going after criminals is a good thing, but the way they are paying for it is grossly unfair,” Paredes said. “They are putting the entire burden on the back of law-abiding gun purchasers.”

The measure, supported by state Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris, is one of more than a dozen gun-control bills introduced in the California Legislature following the massacre of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

“California is leading the nation in a common-sense effort to protect public safety by taking guns away from dangerous, violent individuals who are prohibited by law from owning them,” Harris said.

  1. Congratulations California (or is it Commie-fornia??),…

You just moved this entire country one step closer to out-and-out civil war!

Well done,… you bunch of douch-bags.

JD – US Marines – I think we’re about to start hearing of shooting incidences as they try to “disarm” people.

  2. Good luck, #1. I believe they’ll probably be sending you a telegram, followed by a surprise visit real soon. Lock and load buddy.

    1. #1 – [and everyone else] Get a fun thing called a flamethrower. They really are neat to play with. You can even cook with them; that is anything that needs cooking fast. Plus they can be used to wash MRAPs and anyone riding on one.

Seriously they are a great tool to have, and not very expensive to build.

      Tired of not-really-roasted marshmallows?

Why do they constantly insist on reminding people of an incident that happened almost 5 months ago. It’s over. It’s done. MOVE ON! They need a better excuse than that. In actuality there is no excuse for it because it GOES AGAINST OUR 2nd AMENDMENT, YOU DUMBASSES!!!

““California is leading the nation in a common-sense effort to protect public safety by taking guns away from dangerous, violent individuals who are prohibited by law from owning them,” Harris said.”

Don’t you just love their version of “common-sense”? That’s their new Orwellian vocab word of the month. Wasn’t it Cuomo who coined the term with his NYSAFE Act? Now everyone in politics has to follow him. First it was “Gun control”, then it was “Gun safety” and not it’s “Common sense”. How many times can you change the same word for the same idea? It doesn’t and will never change the fact that WE WILL NOT GIVE UP OUR GUNS!!! GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK HEADS, YOU COMMUNIST/ZIONIST PIECES OF SHIT!!!

    1. Well I don’t know if there were 20 children killed or not? I nor their parents ever saw 20 children killed. Regardless, my right to own and bare arms show not be infringed! I think its time to rally around people who are having their rights infringed upon.

      1. Not one person died at Boston Hoax-a-thon, sandy HOAX, tuscon, Aurora, VA Tech, Paducah etc.

        ALL 100% confirmed government/mossad hoaxes.

I believe if the commies in CA actually are insane enough to TRY and grab guns, as JR said, the war WILL explode — THAT day. Not a chance in hell it will not.

Keep on pushing us — to the end of YOUR lives, zion/illuminati/nwo trash.

You insects want a GD war – you’ll get one….we promise, all 30,000,000 + of us who are LNL, including the 90% ++++ who will defect from the US [israeli] army THAT day, and attack ALL of you, and even your families.

        Have fun! See you there!

  4. I want to be sure I understand the logic of this legislation: In order to reduce violence, California has come up with $24 million (surplus?), to send heavily armed, brutal and unstable police officers out to confiscate guns from criminals and the mentally ill in their homes.

I’m sure it’ll work just fine.

  5. That is why they call it commie-fornia. No offense #1 NWO; I lived there as recently as 2005, and left b/c of the gun laws. Damned if I was gonna register my toys with the CADOJ. Once I loved SoCal, OC, not anymore. Still got my main toys in AZ.

Hell you cannot even carry a 26″ ASP on you. So I started carrying an aluminum bat when walking of the beach at night. In case I spotted a baseball game coming at me with a gun.

  6. “State Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) introduced SB 140, which takes the money from fees paid when people buy guns and allocates it to a three-year campaign to take guns from those ineligible to have them.”

Well isn’t that sweet. The government is continuing to allow us to finance our own downfall, while the politicians themselves make mucho money and benefits off it.

Well if they come, I say show them the the front end of your gun and if they still insist, pull the damn trigger and let them know who’s really the boss.

  7. To be a target of said confiscation, It is enough that your wife filed for a restraining order against you on advice of her divorce attorney in order to get a better settlement. If you have children, a judge usually issues the restraining order unless you prove that you will not become a threat. (Be my guest!) Then you can’t have a gun, and the state of CA will confiscate it if you have one.

What is even more scary here is that they are not after gangsters’ guns. In order to “qualify” for confiscation, a gun owner must have acquired his gun legally. So not a penny of the funds secured by this bill can be used to confiscate guns from violent gangsters who commit 95% + killings in CA.

If this is not a proof of government hostility than what is?
