Drug Test Rick Perry, Says Texas Democrat

Huffington Post – by Arthur Delaney

If Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) wants the poor and jobless to prove they’re not on drugs in order to receive benefits, then Perry should have to pee in a cup, too, says a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives.

State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio) told HuffPost he got his idea from the Bible.

“The Bible talks about not judging others,” Martinez Fischer said. “If the governor wants to sit in judgment, then we’re going to judge everybody by the same standard.”

On Tuesday, Perry proposed drug testing for Texans who seek unemployment insurance or benefits from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, better known as welfare. Perry didn’t say that unemployed and poor Texans were spending their benefits on drugs; he just said the state should make sure it doesn’t happen.

“Texas taxpayers will not subsidize or tolerate illegal drug abuse,” he said.

Lawmakers in more than 30 states have proposed drug testing for welfare benefits in recent years, but only Florida has followed through with blanket testing of welfare applicants. A federal court suspended the effort, citing the U.S. Constitution’s protections against unreasonable searches by the government, but not before several months of testing proved the scheme a remarkable failure. The program cost the state more than it saved, and people applying for TANF benefits turned out to be less likely to use drugs than the general population.

The likelihood of a constitutional challenge hasn’t stopped Perry or other lawmakers from pushing forward with testing requirements. Democrats in several states have responded with bills to drug test lawmakers and governors. After all, Martinez Fischer explained, the governor lives on public funds.

“He’s the largest recipient of government subsidies in the state of Texas,” Martinez Fischer said of Perry. “His subsidy for his mansion is no different from someone else’sSection 8 voucher.”

Martinez Fischer also said Perry “has yet to come clean with his association with painkillers during the presidential campaign.”

Perry’s office declined to comment on Martinez Fischer’s proposal.

  1. …our world continues to decline into absurdity…on both sides of the fence… our “leadership” wouldn’t know freedom or liberty if they had been bitten in the ass by them…

    And why not, pray tell.

The money would just be going full circle.

Yep #1, all the more reason for them govt. workers – at all levels, from the snitch on up to the pres. to have to take a blood alcohol test – to grab a pee cup and a blood test to be checked for blood alcohol levels. Let the govt. workers at all levels step up and be the first to be fired for substance abuse and go directly to prison – and not rehab or jail – but prison.

        Never happen, digger.

Remember, those who create the laws consider themselves above it, naturally.

No #1, they are so full of themselve that they got to lock us guys up so we cannot defend ourselves, and when someone like us does defend ourselves they just shoot-to-kill because they know they will get a two week paid vacation —– AND THEY USUALY GET AWAY WITH IT!!!—- I was now just wondering – has anyone ever heard of a cop that was remorseful and actualy had to sacrifice his lifestyle – his home his kids and everything else, and I mean going to general population in some hard core prison.

EVERY dirty no good SOB politician that holds office or ANY government official, POTUS down to local dog catcher, ought to be piss tested, blood drawn & breathalyzed weekly. Immediate dismissal if positive. WE pay them benefits! I always said Government Officials were nothing more than suits getting Federal welfare checks.

As for this Perry cat, pretty easy for him to attack those that don’t have the ways or means to defend themselves. With all the false-positives I’ve seen, this is nothing more than a money scheme that does nothing but criminalize the poor & unemployed. Shifting focus from individual government incompetence to the end product of their failure. They know States are passing decriminalization laws, so it’s concluded that they will profit from it somehow, by whatever means.

…pee in a cup, probe their body cavities, psychological and physical exam, randomly and repeatedly and publish the results on a website for the world to see. This should go for all the critters in the Federal Government.

Send them all to prison? And just who do you think will be footing the bill for that? A little small minded thinking, wouldn’t you say?
