Around 10 pm on Monday night, someone knocked on the door of Kenneth Byrd’s Lumberton, N.C., home.
He answered it to find a man who claimed to have car problems. The man also said he needed water.
Then two other men wearing black clothing, ski masks and gloves forced their way into the home and demanded money.
Byrd, 67, and his wife Judy, 65, were forced, at gunpoint, to the back of their house to open a safe.
Then the three armed men tried to rape Byrd’s 19 year-old granddaughter.
Byrd managed to grab a gun and shot all three of the suspects. The suspects fired back and the grandfather was hit several times, deputies said.
The three thugs suspects managed to flee the scene in Byrd’s gold Cadillac.
Shortly after the home invasion, authorities were notified that two men, 28-year-old Brandon Carver Stephens and 17-year-old Jamar Hawkins, had arrived at McLeod Medical Center in Dillon, South Carolina with gunshot wounds. Both were airlifted to another hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The third suspect, 20-year-old Jamie Lee Faison, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside Byrd’s stolen vehicle on Singletary Church Road in Lumberton.
Authorities said they believed the trio of thugs may have been involved in other home invasion robberies in the area.
Byrd was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to another for his injuries, which were reported as serious. News2 is reporting that he had surgery and is in ICU.
It is horrifying to think of how different the outcome of this home invasion and attempted rape would have been if Byrd wasn’t armed and able to protect his family.

Finally some good news all except MR BYRD,the real hero getting shot. Great shooting under pressure to sir ,might I add.two cops would have fired 30 or 40 shots to do that if even then!
