“We have taken the liberty of upgrading your (rather tasteless, we must say) blog to our premier GNAA Deluxe Gary Niger (pictured to the left) Signed edition!” read a message on thousands of Tumblr blogs on Monday. Internet trolls known as GNAA have attacked thousands of blogs with a malicious worm and a rather racist message.
“This morning, some of you may have noticed a spam post appearing repeatedly on your Dashboard and on the blogs of a few thousand affected accounts” reads a Tumblr statement. “We quickly identified the source, removed the posts, and restored service to normal. No accounts have been compromised and you don’t need to take any further action” the micro-blogging site added.
The malicious worm that infected Tumblr was able to self replicate. All it needed was for you to click on it and then it would immediately publish itself on your blog. Tumblr initially referred to it as a “viral post”, since big accounts such as The Daily Dot, Cnet and The Verge had fallen prey to the attack.
Truth being told, it was hard not to take a second look at a message that seemed so revolting and offending. “This is in response to the seemingly pandemic growth and world-wide propagation of the most ——– WORTHLESS, CONTRIVED, BOURGEOISE, SELF-CONGRATULATING ANDE DECADENT ——- THE INTERNET EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF FACILITATING”.
As many other hackers have done it before, the attack on Tumblr was a way of announcing there is a security flaw they should really get fixed. “We did intend to protest their lax security practices. We wanted to call out the fact that their security practices are seemingly nonexistent, even when informed well in advance of the problem” reads an email from a GNAA spokesman.
“We contacted Tumblr about this weeks ago and nothing came of it. This was a serious issue that needed to be fixed” a GNAA spokesman told Gawker.
