Off-duty DPS officer shoots, kills 2 pit bulls

KPHO 5 – by Phil Benson

QUEEN CREEK, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) –Two pit bulls were shot and killed Monday by an off-duty Arizona Department of Public Safety officer who said he feared for his life when the dogs came at him in his backyard.

The man’s children were coming in and out of the house and he was worried about their safety when the dogs wandered into the yard of his Queen Creek home.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Joaquin Enriquez said the 80-pound dogs were described as aggressive and not wearing collars.

We spoke to the dog’s owner Monday evening, and he said that his dogs were well-behaved and obedient, and would never attack. He did not want to be identified because he said it would jeopardize his employment.  “He’s just basically pulling this ‘I was in fear for my life B.S.'” he said. “The dogs have never shown aggression.”

The off-duty officer said he attempted to get the dogs to leave his yard just before the shooting at around 11 a.m. Monday. “He tried to get the dogs to leave,” said Enriquez. “He was concerned because he had kids in the house. He was concerned for their safety and his safety.”

The off-duty officer told investigators that the dogs were aggressive. “They attacked him, and that’s when he shot both of the dogs,” says Enriquez. “We have contacted some neighbors who say these dogs have been aggressive in the past.”

The owner told us he had just moved in, so the dogs have only been there for two days. “They have never been outside,” he said. “Not even in the front, and not even in the back.”

He says the dogs are service dogs, and were actually looking for his 14-year-old autistic son when they were shot. “The dogs went that way because that’s where my son had gone,” he said.

The officer’s name was not released. MCSO said he will likely not face any charges. Meantime the dogs’ owner says he plans to sue, since now his autistic son has been left without a service dog.

  1. The killer is a liar.

The two dogs were out and about…..
    they were on an adventure….
they were not home, protecting their property.

This guy needed an excuse to kill so he claims fear for his life.

    I’m sick of these morons.
    NO COPS SHOULD HAVE GUNS….NONE.
Every Civilian SHOULD have a gun to protect themselves
    from the idiots in uniforms.

  2. I hate to get crossways with you George but, you said it yourself,

“The two dogs were out and about…..”
“they were NOT home, protecting their property.”

So this clown that owns these dogs apparently doesn’t pay any attention to his dogs NOR to his autistic whom the dogs were “looking for”.

“We have contacted some neighbors who say these dogs have been aggressive in the past.”

So we are to believe that the neighbors who stated that the dogs had been aggressive before are lying too?

I got news for you, if your dog comes onto my property and so much as looks like it’s going to attack me (or one of my dogs), I’ll shoot it right then and there. Keep your dog at home and there won’t be a problem. My dogs are NEVER out in the neighborhood without being on a leash.

This is one time I have to side with the cop.

    1. The children were “in the house”! These dogs can tear down doors, rip out windows, dig holes up through the floors to get them? The off-duty DPS caused more danger by firing his weapon in a residential neighborhood.

      1. You did not read what is stated in the article…

“The man’s children were coming in and out of the house and he was worried about their safety when the dogs wandered into the yard of his Queen Creek home.”

So the cop’s children are supposed to hold up in the house because an ass-hat let the dogs run loose?

    2. I have to agree. We have 2 Pits, German Rotty and a Mastiff. In their own environment they are peaceful. If 1 gets out they are OK but if 2 or more manage to escape they become a menace. We have neighbors that have Pits and when they manage to get into our property alone they are OK but if both get in it’s game on. I have peppered their ass many a times with Bird shot. Dogs are pack animals period. The owner of the Pit’s is to blame for their deaths not the neighbor wheter or not he is some type LEO.

  3. Off leash? Hunting in a pair? BANG, BANG…Yum, yum. Problem solved for the guilty dog-owner and neighborhood made safer. And, no children were harmed in the making of this commercial!

  4. If two pitbulls come Into my back yard, there will be two less pit bulls in the world. I say good shootin’. Keep your dogs outta my yard…dumba$$

  5. “He says the dogs are service dogs, and were actually looking for his 14-year-old autistic son when they were shot. “The dogs went that way because that’s where my son had gone,” he said.”

Your dogs are dead because YOU didn’t do YOUR job. Service dogs or not, your autistic son is ultimately YOUR responsibility, NOT THEIRS!!!

Now I guess you’ll have to watch him yourself.

  6. This is bullshit. The owner is at fault yes but the pig is a blood thirsty scumbag. There’s better ways than killing two friendly dogs. People are scumbags if they shoot and kill someones pets. F’n bloodthirsty scumbags will find out that they have messed with someone’s family and will be put down.
