One suspect arrested in New Orleans park shooting

Fox News

New Orleans police announced Saturday they have arrested one of the suspects wanted in a park shooting that injured at least 17 people Sunday.

Joseph “Moe” Allen, 32, was taken into custody after turning himself in Saturday, according to WVUE. Detectives named Allen as a suspect Friday and he’s believed to be one of several people involved in the shooting at Bunny Friend Park.

1129 josephallen.jpgWVUE reported Allen has declined to speak with detectives about the incident and is being booked in jail on 17 counts of attempted first-degree murder.

The shooting took place at around 6 p.m. local time after approximately 500 people had gathered at Bunny Friend Park in the city’s 9th Ward to film a music video, the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement.

Photos of the scene showed emergency workers wheeling some of the wounded to ambulances on gurneys while other people who appeared to be in pain lay on the ground.

Police spokesman Tyler Gamble told the Associated Press that the video was being made without a permit to use the park. He added that police were on their way to break up the crowd when the shooting took place.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters that officers were a block away from the park when they heard the gunshots and were flagged down by passersby.

Witnesses told The Times-Picayune newspaper that the gathering was part of an after-party that followed a neighborhood parade. One said the shooting “sounded like New Year’s Eve all over again.”

The paper reported that multiple witnesses saw a man with a silver machine gun fleeing the scene, but noted that the shooting continued as the man ran away.

The Times-Picayune reports, citing Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office records, Allen is a convicted felon and has previously been charged with home invasion, carjacking, illegal carrying of a weapon and possession of cocaine and heroin.

Harrison said Friday that police are “working quickly and aggressively to track down everyone involved in this senseless shooting” at the park.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  1. The perp is a convicted felon. Home invasion, carjacking, illegally carrying a weapon and drug possession. Yet, he is on the streets. How is this possible? I’ll tell you. The prison system is overwhelmed and full of scum, so no one does his/her full sentence. Tens of thousands of these pieces of shit are released on the public every year. No public outrage, no public demonstrations that we’ve had enough and aren’t going to take it anymore. When the Judicial system fails, you not only have a right, but a duty, to look after family, friends, neighbors and community, yourselves. Armed community defense teams are in order. Check out the laws in your state and get organized. Being a victim is just plain stupid.

    1. One of the main reasons for overcrowded prisons is that too many of the wrong people are in there. Prison (and punishment in general) should be reserved for people who actually harm others or their property. Using drugs, selling them to adults who want them, prostitution, dealing weapons, and other such victimless offenses should not be considered crimes at all. That would free up a lot more room in prisons for the people who actually need to be there, and they could be kept there longer.

Of course, there are certain special interests who will do anything to prevent that sort of reform: the pigs, the private prison industry, politicians getting kickbacks, drug companies, and maybe some others.

Anyway, the system needs a reset, so this is all moot anyway.

  2. It don’t matter how many lackeys the joos find for you Obammy…. we aren’t ever giving up our guns…all your doing is cleaning up some of the rif-raf wandering around.

Keep going genius, your days are numbered… 😡

  3. “Photos of the scene showed emergency workers wheeling some of the wounded to ambulances on gurneys while other people who appeared to be in pain lay on the ground.”

The information given, lack of video or convincing pics despite so many technophiles present and meager description of scenes that sound like the reporter is distancing himself for plausible deniability is quite odd.

Still not buying this as it is packaged.

  4. Impressive.

They managed to shoot 17 people, ALL in places that didn’t cause them to bleed a single drop.

    Fine shooting, guys.

    I’m nowhere near THAT good.
