Police: Deadly ambush ‘has touched us to the core’

BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — With the deadly ambush on a state police barracks in the Pocono Mountains, law enforcement in eastern Pennsylvania went on high alert and officers from throughout the region, including New York and New Jersey, joined in a massive search for the shooter or shooters.

But after scouring dense woods on foot and by helicopter Saturday, authorities suspected the assailant had left the area. They had no one in custody as midnight neared, a state police spokesman said. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said the attack Friday night that left one trooper dead and another critically wounded was directed at state police and a “very dangerous, armed criminal” eluded quick capture.

“This attack was an ambush. Our troopers were … shot without warning and really had no chance to defend themselves,” Noonan told reporters Saturday afternoon. “It’s a cowardly attack. It’s an attack upon all of us in society.”

Law enforcement officers searched state game lands surrounding the barracks in Blooming Grove, in Pike County, and beyond Saturday. Several roads around the barracks, including parts of Interstate 84, were closed.

“There has been an exhaustive search conducted by hundreds of members of law enforcement,” said Lt. Colonel George Bivens. “We have canvassed the wooded areas, neighborhoods. We are convinced this individual is no longer in that immediate area.”

Police interviewed a man they called a “person of interest,” but Noonan said authorities are talking to hundreds of people as part of the investigation. He stressed the man is not a suspect. The troopers were ambushed around 10:50 p.m. Friday as one of them was leaving the barracks and another was arriving. Cpl. Bryon Dickson of Dunmore was killed and Trooper Alex Douglass was injured.

Dickson, a seven-year veteran, had transferred to the region from the Philadelphia barracks several months ago. Taken to a hospital, Douglass underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition, Noonan said.

“It has touched us to the core that such a thing could happen,” Noonan said. The slain trooper was married with two young sons. He was described by friends as devoted to work and family. “They were a committed couple,” Melissa Contorno, a friend of Dickson’s wife, told The (Scranton) Times-Tribune. “They were raising a beautiful young family. It’s not fair.”

Blooming Grove is a township of about 4,000 people about 35 miles east of Scranton. State police spokesman Trooper Adam Reed said the barracks cover most of Pike County, which runs along the Delaware River and borders New Jersey and New York.

“There’s a lot of rural area up where they patrol,” he said. “As the primary police force in the county, they’re going to respond to anything and everything.” Gov. Tom Corbett ordered all Pennsylvania flags at state facilities to fly at half-staff and said he was praying for the slain trooper’s family as well as the injured colleague. He canceled all campaign appearances for the day.

“The incident in Blooming Grove shows, once again, that our first responders face constant danger in order that the rest of us may live in peace and safety,” Corbett said in a statement. “Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson and Trooper Alex T. Douglass are heroes who selflessly put their lives on the line every day for their fellow Pennsylvanians,” said Pennsylvania State Troopers Association President Joseph Kovel.

  1. With the actions of so many law enforcement minions today ignoring the rights of the citizens all over the country did they really believe that everyone was just going to pretend they are not doing it? A police state is a police state and it is going to lead to violence and you know damn well that these cops and sheriffs know it will. If they really want to see what the problem is the next time they get suited up to go out and prey on the public maybe they should take a moment and look in the mirror!

  2. “It’s a cowardly attack. It’s an attack upon all of us in society.”

I don’t think it’s cowardly at all. People are fighting back using the only methods available to them. What the hell else can they do?

Now when three pigs beat up on a 70 pound girl, THAT’s cowardly. Or when they fry them to death with tazers, execute people who are handcuffed in the back of the car, kick pregnant women in the belly, commit roadside rapes during traffic stops, etc. etc. etc.

The point being, these stinking pigs who call themselves “law enforcement” have no business accusing anyone of cowardice, because they epitomize cowardice EVERY DAY they go to work. When did you ever see them confront anyone that they didn’t have outnumbered 20-1?

As for it being an “attack on everyone on society”, that might pass with the TV-brainwashed idiots, but most of the country supports this action. The fact of the matter is that pigs have their own society, and the rest of America despises it. The only friends a cop has are other cops. They’re a little cult of brutal and tyrannical criminals and NOBODY else wants anything to do with them.

I’m glad that one stinking pig was taken out of the picture, and I hope this is the beginning of a new fad.

  3. Oh well, then start acting like you love the USA, and quit regarding we citizens as the enemy, and ones to be subjugated! After all, the “enemy”, we citizens, WILL fight back when attacked!
Live by the sword, die by the sword, cowards in blue!

  4. My question is…. What’s the back story? Has anyone seen the commissioner’s televised statement? “This attack was directed at the State Police” No one in custody, a person of interest questioned and this is what they have come up with.
I would not be surprised when they catch the “homegrown terrorist/shooter” with his “ASSault weapon” that there will be quite a bit of legislation rammed through.

  5. To identify possible suspects the highly competent investigators will look at the record of homes and properties the state recently confiscated because the owners’ kids were caught getting high without permission.

  6. I have questions in all of this. What were these COPs hit with? Did they find shell casings? What type of projectile, What type of rifle (assuming it was a rifle). Was it a Thompson Center contender pistol, muzzle loader, or a bolt action of some sort. Like to see the autopsy report, and the ballistics report.

Did this whole thing REALY happen? Sorry folks. Keep thinking about Sandy-Hoax…. or I mean Sandyhook.

They lie, cheat, rob, and murder so much how can anyone trust anything any of these goofs say ever again?

Assuming this is real happenstance who might have a motive to do something like that? I recall something that is going on nation wide called “Asset Forfiture”. Pensilvania was shown to be by far the worst state commiting these legalized thefts and robberies. Out of the many thousands of people who lost their homes, all their money, or worse what possible motive could their be to something like this happening? Also who would have the opportunity? Things like this don’t happen in a vacuum. Most Americans to kill at all is an extreme unnatural act. For most it is unthinkable to harm anyone. What would push good people to strike out oat them like this. I have to also wonder if there will be more in Pensylvania, or is this going to spread. Could it be other COPs doing this? Could it be a Mosad hit. We are talking a state near New Jewsy for goodness sake. Lot of questions surrounding this. Who is benefiting from all of this? You’d think they’d want to keep this incident hushed up from public view. It’s embarrassing for them and shows the population that they are not giants, they bleed, and they can be destroyed. Why would they publicize this at all?

    1. Yea, this makes me wonder if it is a different kind of false flag? They don’t even have a motive. What were they hit with? Did the shooter plan to hit them or was it random? Are they going to find a scapegoat in order to save themselves the humiliation of looking bad for not solving a crime that happened to them personally? All they are doing is telling people they are hunting for someone, but they don’t say anything about WHY or HOW exactly that it started. Why not share the details if they are so intent on getting the shooter or shooters and his gang?

Also, it’s a police barracks. Are you telling me there are no cameras all over the place? Where’s the video footage?

“Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said the attack Friday night that left one trooper dead and another critically wounded was directed at state police and a “very dangerous, armed criminal” eluded quick capture.”

So who was this “very dangerous armed criminal”? Why not give us his name or identify him? Was he an illegal? An MS-13 gang member? An American? Who was he? Was he friends of the shooters? Were they trying to rescue him from the police? Don’t you think that would be significant?

“This attack was an ambush. Our troopers were … shot without warning and really had no chance to defend themselves,” Noonan told reporters Saturday afternoon. “It’s a cowardly attack. It’s an attack upon all of us in society.””

You mean the same kind of ambush that the Albuquerque, NM police did to that guy in the park who wasn’t bothering anyone and wanted to be left alone and they executed him?

      What goes around, comes around.

  7. This is only a little over an hour’s drive away for me. A lot of inconsistencies here for an attack on multiple stasi members, as these little piggies in PA are revered by some bootlickers as some sort of super hero organization. The reaction seems to lack the authenticity of the level of hew and cry that would normally be associated with these jackboots. PA is close to the hotbed of covens that have been overrun by commie joos by hoax galore propaganda but is still very dissimilar in its residents’ views on guns and freedom. Real or not, this will be used to attempt to promote a kosher-red angle. Something wicked this way comes and stinks worse than gefilte fish!

  8. “authorities are talking to hundreds of people ” Yes indeed, every single persons that these cops have preyed upon for the last six months. With those who were beaten being on top of the list. Non-stop brutality from the police state.

  9. If police are already getting away with murder all over the country then they should be looking closer to home. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if it was one of their own. When a group of people are completely out of control it means they are a danger to everyone around them including themselves.

  10. Maybe they should look at these officers records. Possibly one or both brutalized some mundane and he decided on some payback.
