SALISBURY, N.C. — Police are looking for a thief who ran from an Internet café after being shot at by a teller in downtown Salisbury Thursday night.

Officers told Channel 9 that a man came into the South Main Internet Café on Main Street just before 10 p.m. armed with a gun. They said he then ordered everyone in the café to get on the ground and shoved the handgun in the teller’s face, demanding money.

The female teller told Channel 9 she was so nervous that she dropped the till from the machine onto the ground, and had to bend down to get the cash and stack it on the counter.

“I was trying to keep him focused on me and the register,” said the teller who didn’t want to be identified. “When I came back up from picking up money I didn’t see him anymore. I went to see where he was and I noticed the gun was on the counter.”

Police said the suspect placed the gun on the counter while attempting to stuff the cash in his clothing.

The teller picked up the gun, pointed it at the robber and fired a shot at him but missed.

The man ran off and has not been found.

More than a half dozen people were inside the café when the attempted armed robbery happened.

No one was hurt.

Police determined this was not the same man responsible for robbing the Park Sterling Bank on Innes Street earlier in the day.

Investigators released two surveillance pictures of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
