Reid endorses Schumer as his successor

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is backing New York Sen. Chuck Schumer to succeed him as Democratic leader.

Reid issued his endorsement Friday morning, shortly after announcing he would be retiring next year instead of running for re-election.

Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson says that the choice is up to Senate Democrats, “but Sen. Reid thinks Sen. Schumer has earned it.”

Schumer is currently the Senate Democrats’ third-in-command, behind Dick Durbin of Illinois. The outspoken and politically astute Schumer was already viewed as Reid’s most likely successor. But Reid’s decision to bypass Durbin and give his blessing to Schumer could seal the deal.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada-D) announced his retirement in a video on YouTube saying he will not seek re-election in 2016.

In a prepared statement, Reid thanked his supporters and cited his recent exercise accident.

“This accident has caused Landra and me to have a little down time. I have had time to ponder and to think. We’ve got to be more concerned about the country, the Senate, the state of Nevada than about ourselves. And as a result of that, I’m not going to run for re-election,” he said.

President Barack Obama said Reid is a “fighter” and says the Senate will not be the same without him. He says he is proud of what the two have been able to accomplish.

“Harry has become not only an ally, but a friend,” Obama said.

Reid will end a political career that spans three decades. Nevada voters first elected him to the U.S. Senate in 1986. He has served as the Democratic leader of the Senate since 2007. Before coming to Congress, Reid worked as a state lawmaker and chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission.

Senator Reid says he will serve the remainder of his term, which will last approximately 22 months.

  1. Be careful what you wish for: exit Reid, enter Jewish Zionist gun-grabber Chuck Schumer. WORSE than Harry Reid. That always happens.

It’s almost like some kind of sick joke perpetrated on us over and over.

Listen: Schumer is WAAAAAAAAY worse than Harry Reid, I hope everyone realizes that.

  2. I knew that no good piece of dog crap had little grey matter, but he must have lost the last ounce of it when Schumer almost put his eye out when he skull f….. him. Harry, take a walk on the bridge at the dam and lean over to get a good look at the water.
