Self-Guided Bullets That Change Course Midair Are Now Terrifyingly Real

Self-Guided Bullets That Change Course Midair Are Now Terrifyingly RealGizmodo – by Robert Sorokanich

The military masterminds at DARPA have just changed everything you think you know about bullets. Meet the Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance, or EXACTO, a .50 caliber bullet that maneuvers itself midair to stay locked on target. Here’s footage of the first live test: it sure as hell looks like the technology works.

We can’t find a detailed explanation of just how that bullet swerves itself back on-target.DARPA’s public description is, perhaps not surprisingly, rather vague:

The system combines a maneuverable bullet and a real-time guidance system to track and deliver the projectile to the target, allowing the bullet to change path during flight to compensate for any unexpected factors that may drive it off course. Technology development in Phase II included the design, integration and demonstration of aero-actuation controls, power sources, optical guidance systems, and sensors.

The technology, whatever it may be, promises to compensate for wind, dust, and other factors, increasing a sniper’s accuracy and range and reducing the risk that a missed shot could give away the sniper’s location. At one point in time, that would’ve sounded like comic book fantasy, but now that the first live fire has been successful, it’s a stone-cold fact.

Sorry, bad guys: it seems like dodging bullets just got a whole lot harder. [DARPA via The Verge]

  1. Great low quality video GAME graphic. The first official test of the “it’s futile to resist” rifle round.(rifle in ordnance language means shoulder fired up to 16 INCH rifle/gun shells so what is the scale of the video game low graphic footage?0 It has to be real because it will in Battlefield 5 and the promo also has the guy that whips his pistol and defies physics over and over again by “whipping” his bullets “AROUND” hostages, trees and walls with the, here unto discovered, whip the pistol method. Question. Do we shoot ARTILLERY SHELLS this way. Note: while micro tech is really cool Big means you can make a LARGE version to do this first for a LOT LESS. If the bullet is 30 caliber or 5.56 there is very little working area.Next: developing a variable geometry “projectile” is not new as directional fin stabilized and rocket assisted “small” arms (if they could be called that) were fielded and tested in the 50’s through the 60’s. Problem: If you are traveling at 2,800 plus feet FORWARD, where do YOU get the thrust to make that screwed up turn????????How do you overcome the thrust/force/MASS that is already in motion and then RE-AQUIRE the energy to go in the other direct. Oh, and you would like to do damage at the target end, right? (Note: Unlike star trek/ hollywood we have not yet invent enertial dampers for big things let alone a protile. THINK ABOUT IT. DO THE MATH!!!!!!!!! This is a very specialized and stupid expensive thrust supported LARGE BORE system. As they said at Aberdeen “sure we can make anything no matter how complicated but it might be a little costly and you probably want more than one or two to fight a war, right?” DARPA, we don’t have to use anything we invent. Propaganda is our job and THAT we use constantly. ( for about 60 years plus through Popular Mechanics etc…)

    1. I agree with your thinking Mark. Why didn’t they just use the scene from Phantasm where the bot flies into the guy’s head, then the drill inserts. Would have been more realistic.

  2. It looks as if after it makes the arch 45 degree turn it would lose most all its velocity posing little damage to the acquired target. More bs from the it’s futile to resist crowd.

  3. LMAO…..I hope everyone here is a little too smart to believe this nonsense, but with technological advances like this, by next week they will they will have perfected the Ricochet Rabbit bullet.
That’s the one that stops in mid-flight, opens up, and then a little hammer comes out on a hinged arm that knocks you on the head.

    1. JR- There may not be many people posting here that are old enough to remember Hanna Barbara’s: Ricochet Rabbit and his side kick Droop Along. Obviously, I’m more than old enough to recall them.

I think the posts above pretty much uncovered this magic bullet to be another fraud.

desertfox12 nailed it right on the head: “It looks as if after it makes the arch 45 degree turn it would lose most all its velocity posing little damage to the acquired target. More bs from the it’s futile to resist crowd.”

The Laws of Physics, regarding inertia of motion: ‘An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.’

Any force which would act upon the forward motion or direction of a moving object (other than gravity and air resistance), would essentially be applying the brakes to the object’s momentum. The bullet would have to be self-propelled for this to work as stated in the video. It is totally fabricated BS!
