So now HumpDay is racist too eh? #WhenEverythingIsRacistNothingIs

Stacy on the Right

You wanna have a camel in a petting zoo?  Well that’s just racist.

Students at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota have cancelled an event to celebrate the end of the year after complaints that bringing a camel on campus could offend those of Middle Eastern cultures.

The “Hump Day” event, put on by the Residence Hall Association (RHA), was supposed to be “a petting zoo type of atmosphere” in which students could hang out and take photos with a live camel. According to Aaron Macke, the group’s advisor, the camel is owned by a local vendor and trained for special events.

But the event was subsequently cancelled after students took to Facebook to proclaim their concerns. The students said they were concerned about the money spent on bringing the camel to campus—around $500—and the implication that it would be racially insensitive to Middle Eastern cultures.

The Facebook group called “Protest Hump DAAAAAAY!” had more than 100 RSVP’d attendees before it was deleted on Wednesday.

  1. I see this phenomenon (around here, anyway) as being mostly something young people are doing (the “everything is racist” meme). I cannot tell you how many times RECENTLY my own children have questioned remarks I have made, as being “racist.” And you would have no way of knowing this, but believe me there isn’t a “racist” bone in my body. BUT, sure I am aware of some cultural differences that tend to correlate with race. The next word out of the accusators’ mouths is “HATERS!!!!” which is reaaaaallly starting to bug me. It’s so blind, I am rendered speechless, practically. What a conversation ender. Among my friends (of many colors) who are my age, we are able to enjoy each other and have conversations from time to time about our different cultural backgrounds, without taking offense and yes, we do discuss this new “everything is racist” thing. They are just as dumbfounded as I am. So I really see this as being something with young people — some definite recent type of indoctrination going on in the schools, and perpetuated in the media. But not happening in real life so much, well at least not happening in my older crowd. How do we stop this? It’s really insane — so divisive — so stupid.
