Supreme Court allows marriage equality to proceed in Florida starting in January

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday declined to extend a stay sought by Florida officials defending the state’s ban on same-sex marriages, allowing gay marriages to proceed in Florida next month.

Weddings would be allowed to start on Jan. 6 under an order by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta earlier this month.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented from the Supreme Court’s decision.

The high court’s order would make gay marriage legal in 36 U.S. states, including Florida.

In the past year, gay marriage advocates have largely prevailed in court rulings but a Cincinnati-based federal appeals court in November became the first to uphold gay marriage bans.

That decision, by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, has been appealed to the high court, which is likely to announce in January whether it will hear it and decide on a nationwide basis whether the Constitution protects a right to same-sex marriage.

  1. When marriage stopped being a matter of local custom between consenting parties, usually in churches and was placed in the legal domain all sorts of mischief was instituted. Traditionally marriage was simply a declaration before family and community to cohabit in a manner consistent with community values. As soon as lawyers and politicians took over it became a political football to be used for profit and control.

  2. When I read the words “marriage equality” I think of woman paying alimony and child support as well as men getting custody and the house. At least 45% of the time.

I surely dont think of same sex partners(<3% of population) getting tax breaks for NOT producing more "citizens".

AND I have no clue why anyone could possibly think that the Constitution of the United States of America has any bearing on who can and cant be married. I also dont understand why anyone thinks the constitution is a relevant document. The government sure doesnt.
