NEWPORT, TN — The government gets to name your children for you. That’s what one family found out recently in Tennessee.

Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew has ordered that Jaleesa Martin change her 7-month-old son’s name from “Messiah” to “Martin DeShawn McCullough.”

Regardless of the judge’s reasoning, it is not her call to make (in a free society).

  1. I’d be calling the judge by some new names, too.

What about all the Puerto Ricans who name their kids “Jesus.”? (pronounced “hey-zuess” in Spanish)

Will they be barred from entering Tennessee?

  2. As soon as this “judge” said that it was a title only earned by one person and that was jesus I felt she should be forced out of her position. A judge has no right to push religious views only to see that the “law” is adhered to.
Molotov cocktail party at the courthouse.

  3. Theologically speaking, I’d have to say it’s an ill-advised choice of names, at best. Possibly blasphemous, at worst. Just my opinion.

However, from a strictly human standpoint, no one has the right to tell another person what they can or cannot name their children.

  4. This judge overstepped her bounds. She must be removed since her judgment is a violation of the U.S. Constitution
