Texas on high alert after shootings of District Attorney, wife

Washington Times – by Cheryl K. Chumley

Texas prosecutors are on high alert, as the suspects in the weekend killing of tough-talking Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife are still at large.

The shooting follows the January killing of one of Mr. McLelland’s assistant prosecutors in January. Mr. McLelland had been careful after that shooting, carrying a gun with him everywhere, The Associated Press reports.

But on Saturday, he and his wife Cynthia were found dead in their home.

Authorities are stepping up security, offering 24-hour surveillance of prosecutors’ homes, AP says.

“I think district attorneys across Texas are still in a state of shock,” said Harris County District Attorney Mike Anderson, AP reported.

Mr. McLelland is the 13th prosecutor killed in the nation since 1960, AP says.

On Jan. 31, Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was killed in a parking lot outside his office. No suspects have been named in any of the shootings, AP says.
