Trans-Pacific Partnership Vote Nears, Resistance Builds

The fight against the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement continues as a possible April vote nears. The United States and 11 other Latin American and Asian nations are working out the final details of the secret agreement that would affect around 40 percent of the global economy. Recently representatives of several Japanese non-profit digital rights groups presented a joint statement describing the threats the TPP represents to Japan’s culture. The organizations believe the extension of copyright terms will threaten the anime and fan-art communities. They cite a provision that allows authorities to act on alleged violations without a formal complaint. Critics of the trade deal also fear the loss of sovereignty by the individual nations and an increase in power for transnational corporate bodies.
