Woman killed in officer-involved shooting

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A woman is dead after an officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning on the streets of Santa Fe.

Residents woke up to gunfire just after 1 a.m. along Camino Carlos Rey.

Santa Fe police are working alongside New Mexico State Police to figure out exactly what happened.

State Police released the identity of the woman who was killed. She is 39-year-old Jeanette Anaya of Santa Fe.

This all began when a New Mexico State Police officer allegedly spotted a car driving erratically around 1:14 a.m., and from there, things unfolded quickly.

State police say Anaya, the driver, did not stop and a pursuit began. Five minutes later, shots rang out near Herb Martinez Park on Caminos Carlos Rey, where the chase ended. Anaya was killed.

Her male passenger was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Officials say only one NMSP officer was involved.

Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez says information is limited at this time, but investigators are working to piece things together.

“A part of these scenes are you have to talk to witnesses, you have to gather evidence, you have to get search warrants to gain access to vehicles. So, it’s very technical and it’s tedious but it needs to be because that needs to be gathered,” Sgt. Gutierrez said.

The name of the male passenger has not been released. State police say he will not be facing charges.

As the investigation continues, Camino Carlos Rey remains closed between Vereda De Pueblo and Alamosa Drive.

This is the latest in a long list of officer-involved shootings in New Mexico over the last two-and-a-half weeks.

Anaya’s death has come as a shock to both family and neighbors.

“It lit up the room. Every shot that fired, it lit up the room,” said one woman who lives close by the scene.

Residents of the Santa Fe neighborhood describe waking up to gunfire.

“It was sad, shocking, you know, because it’s Santa Fe,” said neighbor Orlando Padilla. “We don’t usually get too many shootings.”

David Martinez, the nephew of Anaya, was shocked when he heard the news.

“It’s unbelievable. I can’t believe it,” he said Thursday. “There are a bunch of bullet holes in the side of her car. There are still a lot of unanswered questions that I want to get to the bottom of.”

It’s not clear whether Anaya died of officer gunfire or a self-inflicted injury.

“It’s out of the ordinary,” said Gutierrez. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks for all law enforcement agencies that have been going through this. So, it’s something we haven’t experienced in a while.”

Online court records show a list of mostly minor offenses for Anaya. Most of them were traffic crimes. She was convicted of battery against a household member in 2010.

He’s probably just sad that he didn’t get to drag her into another county for anal probing.

    No, actually it’s quite simple.

A cop murdered a driver for not stopping.
