Device Explodes at Marine Race on Jersey Shore: Police

NBC New York

A device exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, Saturday morning as about 5,000 people were set to run a 5k Marine charity race and police are investigating another suspicious package in the shore town, authorities said.

The explosive device went off in a garbage can on D Street and Ocean Avenue at about 9:30 a.m., police said.

No one was injured in the blast, according to the Ocean County prosecutor’s office.

The third annual Marine Semper Fi 5k race to benefit the MARSOC Foundation was expected to start at about 9 a.m., but was delayed because of late sign-ins, authorities said.

The race was canceled after the explosion.

Runner Adam Carswell of Toms River, New Jersey, told NBC 4 New York he saw the smoke rising from the garbage can after the explosion.

“It was a big puff of smoke, fairly large,” he said.

Carswell then said he was mad that someone may have planted the device to harm people.

“It makes me very angry that this could happen in a sleepy little town like Seaside Park after Labor Day,” he said.

The device that exploded was connected to at least one other explosive device that did not detonate in the blast, a law enforcement official said. New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad are dismantling the remaining device and a four-block area around where the explosion went off is shut down until it is rendered safe, police said.

The MARSOC Foundation is a non-profit organization that raises money to support “active duty and medically retired MARSOC personnel and their families as well as to the families of Marines and Sailors who have lost their lives in service to our Nation,” according to the groups website.

    1. LOL, that’s what I’m thinking, Koyote. Probably some teenagers goofing around with reloading powder like a lot of kids did back when this sort of prank wouldn’t have even raised an eyebrow, let alone made national news.

A lot of the antics that would have merely gotten me grounded as a boy would get a kid sent to Guantanamo today. This country has become thoroughly pussified thanks to all the paranoia about terrorism and the cowardly obsession with safety.

  2. Oscar the grouch from Sesame street was evidently playing around in the trash.
At least they didn’t have to hire crisis actor’s off of craiglist this time.
I’ll be watching the garbage man next time.
What’s this world coming to when you have to afraid of your garbage can….?

That’s why I never through anything incriminating into my trash.

I heard stories that people , and paparazzi would dumpster dive Penn and Tellers trash in Vegas. On a regular basis.

You’d be surprised what you can find out about a person just digging around in their trash.
