Julie Woodworth, injured UCC shooting victim, is awake but not speaking, doctors say

Here’s an update on how our patients from the shooting are doing.

SPRINGFIELD — Julie Woodworth, the most severely injured survivor of the Umpqua Community College shooting, is awake and able to track objects with her eyes, but she has not yet spoken, doctors at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend said Thursday.

The 19-year-old faces a long recovery from the bullet wound to her brain, but her youth is on her side, PeaceHealth surgeons said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Woodworth has made great strides so far but may face months or even years of recovery, said Dr. Neil Roundy, a PeaceHealth neurosurgeon.

A bullet entered the back of her head on the left side and exited from her left forehead, Roundy said.

In addition to the brain injury, she also was hit by other bullets, which struck her arms and legs, said Dr. Travis Littman, a trauma surgeon.

She was hit by about five bullets, he said.

Although Woodworth is awake, can move her arms, can open her eyes and track objects, “she does not yet interact with people on a verbal basis,” Roundy said.

“At this point we do not have evidence that she fully recognizes or interacts with anybody else,” he said.

The swelling in her brain is diminishing, an important improvement, doctors said.

Also, her breathing tube was removed Wednesday and she is breathing on her own, they said.

“It’s a good day when someone meets that milestone,” Roundy said.

Roundy said they cannot yet determine whether her speech or movement will be permanently impaired, and there’s “a very high potential” that she will have to learn again how to walk, talk, read and write.

Woodworth isone of nine people injured by the UCC shooter, who also killed nine people before committing suicide.

Woodworth was airlifted from Roseburg and arrived at RiverBend about 1 p.m. on Oct. 1, the day of the shooting, doctors said. Within 40 minutes of her arrival at the hospital, surgeons began operating on her brain to alleviate swelling and to remove bone fragments and blood clots, doctors said.

“She’s out of the woods in terms of the acute phase of swelling” in the brain, Roundy said.

Bones in both arms were broken by bullets, and both her legs were struck by bullets but no bones were broken, Littman said.

Woodworth has made two trips to the operating room at RiverBend, for a total of four procedures, he said.

She will be in the hospital’s intensive care unit for another week and in the hospital for another couple of weeks, doctors said.

The second patient from Roseburg at RiverBend remains in fair condition, officials said. Family members have identified her as Amber McMurtrey, a 34-year-old married mother of two. She was shot eight times in the arm and abdomen, family members have said.

Since we have confirmation that this actually occurred, it would appear they’re taking the gun-grabbing agenda to another level. This is further proof of how desperate they’re getting. Time grows very short, imo.

    Thanks, Dawn.

    1. The rumors are flying that Barry is coming to the hospital to visit these patients. I’m getting ready to leave work for the day, so I’ll do some investigating on my way out.

      1. Yup.

I was going to go to Corvallis today, but under the circumstances I thought it best to remain indoors.

Never know exactly which direction the wind is blowing from. 🙄

          1. Think I could risk hitting the video store.

Only about a 3 – 4 min. walk from here.

          2. Play it safe and rent a Disney flick. Don’t make eye contact with anyone you meet on the street. If you are questioned by a goon, tell him you are renting it for your kid’s Common Core school project. Heh.

          3. Can’t, Dawn. I already have all the good Disney flicks (POS that ‘ol Walt was, notwithstanding).

As for eye contact, it’s hard to even meet anyone on the street here, being such a small town. Usually high school kids.

As for the local cops, they don’t harass people here for no reason, like they did/do in L.A., but they’re not adverse to writing tickets when the occasion arises. Helluva a lot fewer of them here, too. 🙂

  2. I wish these people well… when the evil leaves that area you will feel a change of spirit… I know…. every time obama visited vegas… you could just feel the evil presence like darth vader…
Just like Bill Clinton had to visit the Greenspun’s at every visit in Vegas….oy vey… who own the Las vegas sun news paper… and cox cable… oy!… There evil presence will be gone.
When they would show up they would fk up traffic…and all the Henderson bike police in their Nazi boots would be riding around in force… Henderson is where Harry the Dirty Reid lives… so these kike Jews are thick gangsters. Vegas and Henderson. .. is a kike jew mafia controlled town…plus throw in the Mormon mafia too.
