Open-Carry In Florida Could Become A Reality In 2016

Shark Tank – by Javier Manjarres

Yosemite Sam is surely proud of Florida state Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) for his efforts to pass an “open-carry” gun bill.

Gaetz’s sponsored bill has already cleared the first hurdle of getting past the first House committee to arguments in favor and against the bill, allowing the measure to be presented on the floor for a vote that much more likely.

The Republican-led state legislature in Tallahassee, Florida, is very gun-friendly, and would probably love to see Florida taken off the list of the few remaining states that ban citizens from openly carrying a firearm.

But not everyone is happy about Gaetz’s bill moving along the process in Tallahassee.

The race-baiting Miami city police union boss, Javier Ortiz, to take issue with the bill.

Here is what POLITICO wrote about Ortiz’s opposition to the Gaetz’s bill:

“@mattgaetz we don’t need the black panthers threatening police at a jail with guns&rifles due to your dangerous bill,” Ortiz tweeted from his account, showing a picture of alleged armed African-American militants.

Gaetz, who came under fire criticized earlier this year for mocking the grammar of a black lawmaker, quickly responded, “Imagine the backlash if I tweeted this!”

After Gaetz called him out, Ortiz began Tweeting memes of George Zimmerman, the Sanford neighborhood watchman who shot to death Trayvon Martin in a dispute that made Florida’s gun- and self-defense laws a national issue.

Gaetz wants to expand those gun laws in tandem with his father, state Sen. Don Gaetz, who co-sponsored the legislation and whom Gaetz wants to succeed in the Florida Senate this year. Rep. Gaetz told POLITICO Florida Wednesday that the open-carry legislation would not make officers less safe and would not incite vigilante justice.

“That is a reckless and incendiary comment, and I would challenge Mr. Ortiz to show any empirical data that would support his statements,” Gaetz said.

Florida is currently one of 6 states-Texas, California, Illinois, New York, and South Carolina- that does not allow open-carry.

Here is a nifty little map of which states allow what when it comes to firearms.
