State police: Trooper shot dead outside barracks

BLOOMING GROVE, Pa. (AP) — Two troopers were ambushed outside a state police barracks in northeastern Pennsylvania during a late-night shift change, leaving one dead and another injured, and authorities were searching Saturday for the suspect or suspects, state police said.

One trooper was leaving the barracks in Pike County’s Blooming Grove and another was arrived when shots were fired just before 11 p.m. Friday, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said. He confirmed that one trooper was killed and the other was injured and taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Scranton, where he was in stable condition.

Noonan said the attack seemed to be directed solely at state police.

“This has been an emotional night for all of us,” he told reporters.

Law enforcement officials from across the region, including New York and New Jersey, descended on northeastern Pennsylvania to help with the search. The Blooming Grove barracks is in a wooded area, surrounded by state game lands.

Noonan said authorities did not have a description of the shooter or shooters but said they were following several leads.

“We can’t say that the situation is completely in hand,” he said.

Noonan said police did not believe the general public was at risk, but they are asking everyone to be on the lookout for anything suspicious.

Several roads around the barracks, including parts of Interstate 84, were closed Saturday morning. Blooming Grove is a township of about 4,000 people about 35 miles east of Scranton.

Trooper Adam Reed, a state police spokesman, said the Blooming Grove barracks covers most of Pike County, which runs along the Delaware River and borders New Jersey and New York.

“There’s a lot of rural area up where they patrol,” he said. “As the primary police force in the county, they’re going to respond to anything and everything.”

  1. And so it begins. I am not saying that these particular officers did anything wrong, but Americans have reached the point where all the police brutality and murder is now starting to boomerang back at them. The saying is old but quite true: “You reap what you sow.”

    1. I am in Full agreement. Not to say they deserved to be shot and killed but people have had enough. Watch for more news like this in the near future.

  2. The PA State Police are notoriously corrupt. I wonder if this was a hit to settle a personal score or to eliminate potential witnesses to corrupt dealings?
In any case, whomever did this, had no fear.

You can expect “hyper vigilance” as a response from the LEO community; aka bring in the jackboots.
This is not good because anytime you mix badges, guns, and sphincters that are slammed shut out of fear, there is blow back.

Don’t be surprised when they start saying phrases to include such words as radical, right wing, anti-government, sovereign citizen, militia, terrorists, gun owners, conspiracy theorist, Christian, “birther”, and “truther”.
Although not a complete list by far, they’ll try to put everyone of those words in a sentence and then some if they can get away with it.

    This could get interesting.

“An assault on the king’s men is no different than an assault on the king himself.”

  3. Pennsylvania is the WORST for something called “ASSET FORFITURE”.

Who enforces this against the people? Who would have a motive, and opportunity to do something like this committing what it their mind would be an “Act of War” against a foreign enemy? Don’t have to be militia or right winger as they always try to smear and malign. All a person has to be is someone who’s been hurt, or loved ones hurt or killed to have motivation to retaliate.

Who has the opportunity? 100,000,000 armed Americans. HOSTILE Americans. Finding a needle in a haystack would be child’s play in comparison. They will probably grab someone at random and use them for a “Patsy”, because they are dumb, incompetent, mean criminals. Nothing more. Doubt they will get much public cooperation in that state.

  4. Oh wow! This is terrible!!!

I’m SO devastated by this heartbreaking (sob, sob) news, that I have to go right outside and fire up some Burning Man O.G. to celebr… er… I mean mourn the passing of such a fine fellow. 🙁 …er, I mean 😆
