‘The World Will Be Shocked’: Greenwald on Upcoming NSA Exposé

Common Dreams – by Andrea Germanos

“The world will be shocked” by the next story on the National Security Agency’s vast spying operations, said Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist leading the exposure—made possible by leaks from whistleblower Edward Snowden—of the agency’s far-reaching surveillance.

Glenn Greenwald (R) speaking with Eric Bolling on Fox & Friends about the ongoing revelations of NSA spying and whistleblower Edward Snowden.Speaking Tuesday morning with conservative host Eric Bolling on Fox News’ Fox & Friends, Greenwald hinted that a new NSA story was forthcoming and potentially explosive.

When asked if he was ready to unveil a new NSA scoop, Greenwald responded:

I will say that there are vast programs of both domestic and international spying that the world will be shocked to learn about that the NSA is engaged in with no democratic accountability, and that’s what’s driving our reporting.

Greenwald also gave a preview of this next exposé over the weekend during a speech given to the Socialism 2013 conference, saying it would report on “a brand new technology [that] enables the National Security Agency to redirect into its own repositories one billion cell phones calls every single day.”

The example the Obama administration is setting with Snowden, Greenwald explained to Bolling, is to give a warning to future whistleblowers that the repercussions will be swift and harsh.

I think what the Obama administration wants and has been trying to establish for the last almost five years now with the unprecedented war on whistleblowers that it is waging is to make it so that everybody is petrified of coming forward with information about what our political officials are doing in the dark that is deceitful, illegal or corrupt.

They don’t care about Edward Snowden at this point; he can no longer do anything that he hasn’t already done. What they care about is making an extremely negative example out of him to intimidate future whistleblowers from coming forward because they’ll think that they’re going to end up like him. That’s their objective.

On what he sees as “Snowden’s endgame,” Greenwald, who said he has not seen the whistleblower since he left Hong Kong, replied:

Well, from the very first time that I spoke with him he said that he completely understood that once he came forward against the U.S. government and the Obama administration that he would become the most wanted man on earth, and would be hunted down by the world’s most powerful state, and that he felt that it was worthwhile to do that because he could not in good conscience allow this massive spying program aimed at the American people to be constructed in the dark. And he said obviously he wants to stay out of the clutches of the U.S. government given the way they’ve persecuted whistleblowers. He’s obviously trying to find a place where he can do that but his real goal is to continue to be part of the conversation about why he did what he did, what it is that he saw in the NSA, how these spying powers were being abused, and to continue to make people around the world and his fellow citizens in the United States aware of what their government is doing.

Later on the program, Fox News legal analyst Peter Johnson Jr. said that Greenwald has been “involved with the WikiLeaks” and “has it a little bit mixed up.” Johnson called Greenwald “almost a flack, the alter-ego for the media” for Snowden.

In the interview with Bolling, Greenwald explained:

This is what journalism is about—shining a light on what the most powerful people in the country are doing to them in the dark.

Johnson said that “transparency is the issue”—not the transparency of the U.S. government, officials or the NSA’s vast surveillance program—but about Mr. Greenwald, whom he said may be an “advocacy journalist,” not “merely a reporter.”

  1. Well the NSA and other agency’s have been doing this for a long time. We that are ‘awake and aware’ have known this. Whistleblowers that are being covered by the MSM are now getting this out to the unaware public. This has to be a good thing.

LOL I remember, about a year ago, telling my family members that I closed my Facebook account because I knew the government was spying on all of us and collecting data. They all thought I was crazy….

    1. I’ve stopped using facebook as well, it was actually their reporting system that woke me up when my account was being attacked almost hourly by American based sources and my crime if it is a crime is I have been exposing corruption and criminal behaviour here in the UK regarding social workers stealing children for profit.

  2. The Gestapo were able to control Dresden, a city of two million people, with just twenty eight Gestapo officers, because the people of Dresden didn’t know how few there were and they believed their reach went much farther and deeper than it did. This gave the Gestapo real physical control of the city, as much by impression and deception as actual capability.

Maybe US security agencies want their blanket collection of intelligence to give the impression they have many more operatives than they do; gathering all this intel doesn’t mean they have the forces to act on it. Like someone once said, “Power perceived is power achieved.” Another part of the psy-op?

    1. But the Gestapo had their equivalent of the CCTV in the form of their “snitch” network, blocks of flats had usually a concierge who would record comings and goings, listen to conversations over the phone and even loiter outside flat doors to listen in, these were largely unpaid and used extensively in “crimes against the state” cases where they would falsely attest against people of a multitude of crimes that there were no defence of such as mocking the Fuhrer, spreading defeatism, doubting the “victory” were fast becoming the most common crimes in that period.

It has to be remembered too, the Nazi’s summary justice was appalling, a defender was appointed yes but he rarely said a thing because to go too far would have ended up with him in the dock within a week himself, Judges were given the sentences beforehand through a series of coloured marks on the prosecution file, red meant decapitation, black meant firing squad, others were for penal battalion, mental hospital, work camps but the Judges didn’t dare not agree to this because the Gestapo would have them on the griddle fairly quickly too.

In a leap of time, I find it interesting that yesterday, the British government has announced that with an increase in the territorials, that they will all become part of an intelligence and cybersecurity force which sounds quite chilling in context with the above, in short we will have spies amongst our midst paid to listen to every conversation in the pub or at work.

  3. I still have a facebook account. No one I am “friends” with posts anything political or “controversial.” It is all just mundane and fairly superficial stuff. Or politically correct stuff. Is this harmless or is there danger in it? Some people I know have become so reliant on facebook for keeping in touch, that if I dropped facebook, I would never hear from these people again, possibly. I will not be flippant and say, “no loss” because it WOULD be a loss. I have tried to steer several of them back towards old ways of communicating, and so far I have had little luck.

  4. Greenwald and Snowden are NOT telling us anything we didn’t already know. This is the “mainstream” Israeli controlled media trying to regain it’s credibilty as a watchdog. You notice that, just as with Wikileaks, nothing is EVER mentioned that is detrimental to Israel. Nothing is mentioned about the Israeli companies doing MOST of the spying. No laws are ever repealed or changed as a result of these great “revelations” from Snowden. It’s ALL garbage info that was well known by internet researchers.

    1. Right on. I’ve been saying this since the beginning.

They WANT everyone to know they are being watched.

Besides, the dumbed down sheeple actually think it’s cool to be ignorant and not give a shit about anything except their momentary pleasure.

  5. It better be that the US did 911 on itself, with the help of Israel, UK & misc western intelligence.
Anything else would be pretty ho-um at this point.

  6. I think the last time I was actually shocked about something was when I discovered that cancer is curable, and easily at that.

Since escaping the matrix, very little has any shock value these days.
